Kalamazoo is halfway between Chicago and Detroit in mileage and in practice.  While it has symptoms of all the problems effecting Michigan, it also has the advantages of a metropolitan area like Chicago.  It has a strong cultural base in the arts as well as a livable environment.  The people who live here identify strongly with Kalamazoo.
